Lion and Baby

So... an update. About a month ago I waved the white flag on my graphic novel. Being a full-time mom doesn't leave much time for drawing and anyone who's ever worked on a comic knows that creating a comic is very time intensive. Despite working on the book whenever I had a spare moment, I was just getting further and further behind schedule and more and more frustrated. When I realized it was going to take me over a DECADE to finish at the slow pace I'd gotten to, I knew it was time to give up.

I will of course continue to post new art here on the blog, hopefully a little more frequently. This painting is of my newest little nephew (yay!).

I also apologize for my over full e-mail inbox that has been rejecting mail this past month. I'll be posting a new artist address as soon as I get it set up.

Yeah… don't worry. Being a full-time parent IS hard work.

Much harder than we can imagine.

So… again: don't worry.

Kids take a lot out of you. I try to have a plan of what I want to get done each day. But as a parent I have to allow myself to go with the flow, and I know that means my plans usually don't get done.

My list of artistic To Dos has not changed 1 bit in a month.

Parenting is a full time job, plus some, full stop. I have great ambitions as well, but I can only go at them haphazardly. Something as cohesive as a book project would take, indeed, a decade at the pace things go around here.

I hope you can find a way to make the comic work. Your art is too beautiful to do without. Even a sitter a couple of days a week might help you some. (I'm not privileged enough to do that, but I've heard of it, especially with women who want to stay at home and freelance).

Good luck!

Oh NO!!! I thought that your graphic novel looked fantastic. I mean: really, really intriguing and well done. If I offered to take care of your child, would you finish? (Just kidding.)

Good luck. I hope you keep working away and finish at some point . . .

(Any chance that you'd send me a sneak peek at what you've done so far? I'm dying to see it.)

Haha, self portrait? Looks like the faraway stare of an overwhelmed parent... much like the one I see every night in my bathroom mirror. Bummer about your novel, but I'm sure you'll get back to it someday! In the meantime, enjoy the wee li'l one!

it's been a long waiting, but every drawing you post is so inspiring...that we can wait!you have very patient fans! take care of your child and keep on going like this!

Very beautiful! I'm sorry about the novel. I'm finding myself in the same boat with my own work. But I'm sure being a parent comes with so many rewards! Perhaps you can revisit your comic in the future :)

Don't stress it Sarah. Talent like your could never stay surpressed for long. As your daughter gets older you'll find more time for your creative endeavors. In the meantime enjoy your greatest creation.

I have to agree with Peter. Kids are little for such a short period of time and before we know it they will be off to school. Then we will have more time for creative projects. I have a 3 yr old boy and a baby arriving any day, could be today, tomorrow, who knows (she's 7 days over due) I work as an illustrator and after I've met my deadlines and done the paperwork and books and looked after my kids(i work from home) there is NO time left for my own stuff.I was lamenting that for a long time but now I just don't sweat it. Those projects can wait just a couple quick years while I enjoy the kids-They grow too fast!!!!!

Anyway, sorry for such a long ramble. I really love your work and look forward to when you do have the time to complete that project, which, by the way, is looking superb.

ugh... i know what you mean... being a mom and pursuing personal art projects is VERY impossible. I'm working on one too...i still think you should do it though! imagine how fun it would be to have it sitting on your shelf, under your belt...... just don't plan on getting it done anytime soon. hah :)

You don't know me, but I really like looking at your blog and artwork. I am an artist (not as far along as you though in creating as I would like to be) and I am a mother, so understand how hard it is to do art and be a mom. I admire you that you are able to still create as much art, and as good of art as you do, while being a mom, so you inspire me to try harder.

I have four kids.... this mostly explains my sporadic posting on my own blog. The best solution I could find is to have an established, set-in-stone time each night for me to work on whatever projects currently flog my mind. 9:00 PM to 11:00 PM is my time.

no comic? i'm so sorry - sounds like my story last semester, as you may recall. i'm sure you've got heaps of great art out of it so far, however - your portfolio is probably teeming with superior work now! i'm always rootin' for your stuff!

I am a designer and I have a two year old. My suggestion, don't worry at all about getting things done the 1st year. after 18 months or so you suddenly get your life together and free time. enjoy your baby. I really enjoy your art.

Sorry to hear that it may be a few years before we see your graphic novel in print, but it's even better that you are able to spend quality time with your little one. :) Still, I hope to see some of your short stories and art in publications like "Flight" until then!

Hey Sarah. I'm a huge fan. Maybe you could check out my sketches... www.simplyoutgoing.blogspot.com

I'm only 15, so I'm still using computer paper and crayola colored pencils, but I hope you check them out and give me some feedback. That would be great.

By the way I like your second tooth fairy, the strange one...its sooo good. =]

I must echo the same sentiment as other posters and say that I Love the expression of the lion!! LOL! And I think that there is always room for our dreams in our lives. As your child gets older more opportunities will come for you to finish your dream! It'll happen!! :)

Ah thats bad luck Sarah! Sorry to hear that! BUT...having just become a new dad 6 months ago i know the incredible time consuming nature of kids and work! They do not mix!

I hope you do keep posting new art though as i've been a big fan since we met at Flight!

Good luck with the little one! I know that ours is a handful and look forward to anything you decide to post!

If I had half your talent, I would never give up on that Graphic Novel. Just chip away at it slowly and throw away the time line. You'll get it done. I am such a huge fan!!!
